 PARENTING SWEET DECEMBER 2024

As we face the ongoing devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, our hearts are with the families, individuals, and communities in Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and Western North Carolina. We are deeply saddened by the loss and destruction, but we know the spirit of resilience that runs strong through Appalachia.

Monthly Fun Poll: What’s the best gift you could receive this season?

Holidays or Holi-Dazed? Preparing for the Holiday Season

The holidays can be a time when joy and anxiety mix. We want our children to enjoy every moment, but sometimes we struggle to keep up or to set realistic expectations for ourselves.

As Jim Burns at HomeWord puts it, “For many of us, the holiday season is a time that is anticipated with both joy and anxiety. Sure, we love the celebrations, the family traditions, and we cherish the memories of holidays gone by; but along with them, we add the stresses of preparation, expectations and the fear of letdowns, or family squabbles that we have experienced in the past.” Read his ten tips to restore sanity and create an enjoyable, meaningful holiday season here.

Staying Close to Your Grandchildren

The doorbell rings, and your children shout with glee, “Grandma’s here!” Smiles, hugs, and excitement fill the room. The Grandparent-Grandchild relationship can be a special bond, but some grandparents report that the connection changes over time. Learn more about this special relationship and how to nurture the grandparent-grandchild relationship.

Thankfulness Beyond Thanksgiving

Here’s some post-Thanksgiving food for thought: Gratitude is a developmental skill that can be nurtured and grow over the years. Parents and caregivers can help children learn and express thankfulness by meeting children’s needs and helping them feel safe and loved. Read more and view a special video reel from Flourishing Homes & Families.

Building a Support Community

“Healthy parents lead to healthy families. Not just physical health but emotional health too. However ‘going it alone’ with even just one child, let alone multiple children, doesn’t lend itself to positive mental health – no matter what Instagram says. Oftentimes parents feel stressed, overworked, judged, and inadequate. Burnout and exhaustion are real, but without a community around to validate those feelings, many moms and dads feel like that pain is unique to them.”
