Conversations about screen time: they aren’t easy! Our devices and apps are designed to be addictive, and helping our children to limit screentime or to set rules can often lead to harsh words and hurt feelings. The good news is that by nurturing connection with our children and changing our the way we think about the problem, we can work together with our children against screens.

Find help for conversations with our children about technology in “Screen Time: From Conflict to Cooperation.”

“Research found that the more time per week that children spent on screens between two and three years old the poorer their performance on behavioral, cognitive, and social development at 3 years old. Other problems from too much screen time include poor sleep, vision problems, and obesity. Research has also found that increased use of screens was also associated with less efficient and organized brain development in the area of the brain that supports language, executive functioning, and literacy skills.”

Read on to consider a Speech-Language Pathologist’s perspective on screen time for young children.

What Do Parents Believe About Screen Time?

In 2020, Pew Research published a report called, “Parenting in the Age of Screens.”

Researchers surveyed U.S. parents to learn about how children engage with digital technologies, screens and social media, as well as parents’ attitudes about these behaviors, their concerns about their child’s use of technology, and their own assessment of their parenting and experiences with digital tech. We’ve shared a few key findings from the report here in this issue of the Parenting Sweet.

From the report – can you relate?

Among parents of children ages 11 or younger… 71% were concerned their child might ever spend too much time in front of screens.

Many parents believe technology is a reason why parenting is harder today than in the past. Sixty-six percent (66%) of parents believe parenting is harder today. Many parents cited the impact of technology, screens, and social media.

Smartphones: A majority of parents (73%) believe it is acceptable for children to have their own phone only after reaching the age of 12.

Tablets: Parents are more accepting of children having tablets at a younger age. Sixty-five percent (65%) of parents say it is acceptable for child to have their own tablet computer before the age of 12.

Roughly 8 in 10 parents place limits on their child’s screentime.

68% of parents sometimes or often feel distracted by their own phones when spending time with their children.

Kids & Screen Time: How to Use the 5 C’s of Media Guidance

Recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, this article explains the 5 C’s of media use for parents to use with their children.

The 5 C’s of media use are based on the Child, the Content, ways to Calm down, what media is Crowding out and ongoing Communication. You can use these to build upon how you’re already connecting with your kids.

Bonus: find the AAP’s series of five age-based handouts, which explain how to use the 5 C’s for differing age groups of children.

Wait Until 8th: Take the Pledge

The Wait Until 8th pledge is a commitment to wait until the end of 8th grade to give children a smartphone. When you take the pledge, you can include your school district and be notified when other families in your community make the pledge! The site also has recommendations for basic phones & watch phones for children who need a way to reach caregivers, without jumping to a smartphone.
